The history of the Rifugio Monte Muro

Family business and hospitality for three generations in the mountain hut on the Passo delle Erbe in South Tyrol.

What was once a small hut with a wood stove and a table is now a popular family refuge.
In 1975, Paul and Maria rented the hut and catered for winter guests. Two years later they bought the cottage and converted it into a mountain lodge. In 1979, with the help of their three children, the first five-room Rifugio Monte Muro was built. Thanks to a ski lift, the hut was open all year round until 1998, when Paul, Maria and their daughter Lucia continued to run it in the summer.

The five grandchildren spent carefree holidays here, and until 2013 there were also goats, rabbits and chickens. In 2013 the eldest son, Claudio, took over the business with his wife Claudia and their children. With the new building in 2014, 16 new rooms and an additional dormitory with 15 beds in 2020, the mountain hut has continued to develop.
